EPA & TECHNICAL TIPS: TRAINING TIPS with the Uni-ram UM120W gun washer

Because of today's evolving paint systems, yesterday's products used to sand, buff and finish do not work the same on new high solids and scratch resistant clears. Time can be saved by choosing the right pad and compound on these tough new clears. In addition, sanding thoroughly with finer grit on the final step is a necessity; without incurring additional buffing time, product use and/or increased customer comebacks. Not all clears are the same when it comes to sanding and buffing. Testing is needed to figure out what grit paper will work for the pads and compound you’re using. Generally initial sanding can be done with 1200 grit or P1500 grit, then going finer if necessary. Test, inspect and adjust as needed for the best and fastest results.

Basic tools include a variable speed rotary buffer, pad spur or brush, good lighting and YOUR EYES. If you don’t inspect from all angles with properly placed lighting you can miss sand scratches and waste time with a redo later. Any twisted/cutting wool pad can give you a better cut than foam on the first step. For the best cutting and excellent finishing without pad marks use the WIZARDS® #11203 blended wool pad. Combined with WIZARDS® #11048 Mystic Cut Compound it will meld away scratches and finish to an outstanding gloss. The Nano-Sphere abrasive used in Mystic Cut will provide progressive cutting without grit or deep swirls.

A second pass using Mystic Cut Compound and a foam pad will provide a flawless swirl-free finish on most colors. Pad choice is important here too. The foam colors between different manufacturers are not uniform, so you have to use what works for the paint type you are working on. Generally for the second pass, use a rigid foam pad. WIZARDS® #11204 yellow or #11205 white pad is the perfect choice. If the paint you’re working on needs a finer touch, follow up with #11047 Mystic Polish Machine Glaze and a softer #11206 gray or #11209 blue foam pad for micro finishing. Always leave a film for final wipe down using a high quality #11420 Multi-Fiber cloth.

Final clean up with a spray detailer like #01214 Mist-N-Shine® using a clean Multi-Fiber cloth is recommended. If more protection is desired, apply #11033 Shine Master Polish & Breathable Sealant by hand for a slick feel and extreme gloss.
